Diego Gets Moony – Eyed

Lola…

Well if you’re going to like a girl…

Miercoles! Miss English is coming over!

Beautiful, long, thick, toffee- banana hair, delicate heart-shaped face, big hazel eyes, perfect button nose and teeth that have been both whitened and straightened.
Miercoles otra vez!

I just realised how that looks – I am, of course, describing Lola not Miss English!
I don’t do crushes on grown ups. Let’s face it – until last lesson I didn’t do crushes on anyone. Now here I am moony-eyed over the most beautiful girl in school. I might as well have a crush on a movie star. A movie star that’s spoken to me, laughed with me, offered a sympathetic ear (refused – when you’re trying to pull a movie star, never let on that you’re down on your luck), touched my knee more than once and shone that sweet shy smile on me many times in the space of one heavenly hour.
But only because Miss Science made us lab partners and Lola was in about as much mood to investigate the properties of stone as I was. I think I’ve said (written) before that most girls are all right if you have to work with them. Lola was better than all right. She made me smile and laugh. Miracles happen.
She seemed happy to work with me. She came straight over and nudged me conspiratorially, “So, rocks, like, sooooo fascinating!” She rolled her eyes dramatically and we both giggled.
Her hair brushed against my face, as she laughed, soft and tickly.
I didn’t get tongue-tied though, I joked back at her and got her laughing.
And that was the beginning of a beautiful lesson, of whispered jokes and stifled giggles and jealous looks. For an hour I felt like king of the world.
So that’s what girls can do for you.
She’s smiling at me now. A secret smile, remembering a little joke from last lesson, private between just us.
I’m trying to hold onto the king feeling but it’s slipping…
Pathetic huh?
Can I blame hormones?
Last thing I bloody need…
